A gala Saturday night will kick off the city of Washington’s 175th anniversary celebration and is an important fund-raiser for upcoming events.
The dinner and dance will take place at the Knights of Columbus Hall. More than 400 people are expected to attend.
A similar event was held during the city’s sesquicentennial celebration.
The evening will include a short program. Mayor Sandy Lucy will give the welcome and Nadine Feltmann and Joe Schneider, co-chairs of the 175th anniversary committee, will speak briefly.
According to public records, Washington was founded by Lucinda Owens on May 29, 1839, as she, with the assistance of her son-in-law, John S. Mense, traveled to the county courthouse in Union to file a plat of Washington, thus establishing the city.
With her husband William’s murder in 1834, his dream of establishing a community might also have died had it not been for the determination of his widow to carry out his vision, local historians said.
Though several families had already chosen Washington as their permanent home, it was not until this date in May that Washington was officially incorporated.
Other major events for the 175th celebration include a community parade and picnic and a dedication of the Owens monument over Memorial Day weekend.
Planning for the city’s birthday has been under way for over two years by the 175th Anniversary Committee, which includes several subcommittees to help coordinate specific events.
“I can honestly say I’ve never seen people this excited about a ‘Dodransbicentennial’ ” said Feltmann. “We have had overwhelming support from the community in the form of sponsors and volunteers.”
Feltmann said Saturday’s gala is a great way to kick off the yearlong celebration.
Parade, Picnic
The May celebration will feature a parade Saturday, May 24, at 11 a.m. through Downtown Washington followed by a picnic from noon to 7 p.m. at the city fairgrounds.
The picnic will feature a Battle of the Bands competition for amateur musicians, canoe races, boat races, dart ball tournaments, sack races, bubble trucks, bake-off, bounce house for the kids, face painting, sand volleyball tournaments, and a wide variety of food and drinks.
“From small children, to those who remember our 150th Anniversary, the picnic will have something fun and exciting for everyone Memorial Day weekend,” Feltmann said.
The following day, on Sunday, May 25, at 2 p.m. a dedication of Lucinda and William Owens monument will take place in Krog Memorial Park.
Another anniversary event in 2014 will be an invitational antique vehicle display Sunday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Front Street in Downtown Washington.
More details of the picnic will be announced in the coming weeks. The picnic committee invites residents to join its Facebook Page at www.Facebook.com/Washmo175.
Updated information also will be provided on Washington’s Chamber of Commerce website at www.WashMo.org.
